Anti-fungal Nail Treatment

Fungal nail infection is also known as toenail fungus or onychomycosis. If your nail is crumbly and white, it may be infected with fungus. Although nail infections don't look very pleasant, they are not a serious medical condition. But that doesn’t stop sufferers from feeling embarrassed about their feet or preventing them from wearing the shoes they want to, especially in summer. Fortunately, there are treatments that can make fungal nail infections go away. These treatments can vary from prescription only fungal nail tablets such as terbinafine (also known under the brand name Lamisil), to over the counter creams and solutions.

 

Terbinafine fungal nail tablets are an extremely effective medicine for the treatment of toenail fungus. This is because terbinafine tablets are taken orally which allows the medicine to enter the blood.

From here it can effectively start to treat fungal nail infections. Results are much faster than with creams and solutions, with most treatment courses lasting 12 weeks. Terbinafine tablets will not cure your already damaged nail, they work by killing the fungus so that a new healthy nail can grow in its place.

These tablets can sometimes adversely affect the Liver. Our service therefore will take a blood test prior to prescribing the medication. We would also require a blood test if you are on a longer course or treatment to ensure your liver function is normal.

Over the counter creams and prescription only solutions such as Trosyl (tioconazole) can also be used to treat fungal nail and can be very effective. You may also prefer a topical fungal nail treatment if you are concerned about the side effects of taking fungal nail tablets such as Lamisil or terbinafine.
